God Language

In light of changing traditions, this workshop will examine the tension between immanence and transcendence, as well as Kevah ( fixed prayer ) and Kavvanah (intention) as it relates to God language. We will look at the impact the women's movement has had on Jewish liturgy, exploring old and new names for the Divinity. We will seek and learn new names of God for our own prayers.

Bibliodrama

Explore the meaning of the Biblical text through Bibliodrama- a method of weaving our lives through the sacred stories of our people. We will use the story of Rachel and Leah which will allow us to explore the issues of sisterhood, competition, jealousy, love, fertility and co-operation while learning Torah!

The Last Taboo: Is there a Torah of Money?

By exploring ancient Jewish stories, teachings and anecdotes involving money, especially focusing on tzedakah, we will decide for ourselves whether Judaism has relevant wisdom on this difficult subject. Our methods will be light-hearted- interactive text study, bibliodramatic play, even a song or two. You will have fun exploring the last taboo.

The Transformative Power of Story

Music, literature, theatre and film are contemporary ways that we tell each other our stories. Fictionalized accounts of relationships within the family, community, or with one's self hold up a mirror for us to better understand our own lives. This workshop will examine two or three such stories within a Jewish context, focusing on the opportunities for spiritual healing and transformation available to the characters, and to us.

Miriam the Prophetess

With seven separate citations in Scripture, Miriam is the most clearly rendered and remembered woman in the Bible. We will discover how Miriam's character evolved over time, what her unique role was in Israelite society, and who she can be for us today. Through close reading of text as well as music, personal reflection and discussion, we will bring the figure of Miriam to life.

Bible Babes a Beltin'

This session will bring alive the stories of women of the Bible. We will learn, through song - all original composition- the tales of Miriam the prophetess, the Matriarchs, Deborah, as well as other obscure and unnamed women. Be prepared to sing along.

Jewish Women's Magic

Judaism has a vast and rich esoteric tradition, some of which has been lost to modernity. We will explore several of the traditional Jewish magical practices including a look at amulet making, angelology, and child birthing rituals. We will give particular attention to the role of women as they handed down their lore through the generations.

Jewish Women's Music

This workshop will examine the latest in Jewish women's music. Included will be the themes of contemporary Jewish women's music, an introduction to the composers, and of, course some singing. Be prepared to learn some new tunes to enhance your Shabbat/holidays, accompany rituals and make your soul dance!

Creating Ritual: Celebrating Life's Passages

This session will take a look at samples of Jewish rituals from Biblical time to present. The presentation is done with music invocation, time for sharing and is itself an experiential ritual of empowerment.

Angels

This workshop will explore the Jewish angelic tradition from Biblical times through Rabbinic and medieval eras. We will discuss their roles and functions, including their presence in a contemporary age.

Jewish Women and Prayer

This workshop will survey the classic examples of the prayer/praying models we have of Jewish women from Biblical time through today. We will take an in-depth look at T'khines, a genre of Medieval prayers. In addition we will take time for our own spiritual compositions.

Rosh Hodesh

This workshop will explore the observance of Rosh Hodesh ( new moon) from Biblical times to today. We will survey the Jewish traditional body of practices surrounding the appearance for the new moon. As well, we will examine the contemporary practice of Rosh Hodesh gatherings as they relate to the hunger for ritual in our lives

Developing Paths of Gratitude

How can we express our experiences of joy, wonder, frustration, grief, in a Jewish context? What do the "Various Blessings" reveal about our Jewish worldview? For every life experience, there is a blessing. We will explore how to recognize and respond to the blessings in our lives.

Heal thyself: Sing!

Singing soothes the soul. Tap into the richness of traditional and contemporary Jewish songs that can be used towards emotional healing. No special skills required - just bring an interest in lending your voice and spirit to the group.

Guard My Tongue—It's Out of Control

A look at what Jewish texts have to say about the power of speech and how to avoid Lashon Ha'Ra. We will also examine the function certain restrictions have served over time, and the applications these strictures have in our lives today.
